Ethical Breeders

What is the best way to select an ethical, responsible German Shepherd breeder?

Selecting the right breeder is one of the most important steps in bringing a German Shepherd into your home. Ethical breeders prioritize the health, temperament, and well-being of their dogs over profit. Haus Mahr German Shepherds & Training participates in the AKC Bred With H.E.A.R.T. program which requires an ongoing commitment to the health and well-being of puppies. Here are some key factors to consider when choosing a responsible breeder:

Health Testing & Genetic Screening

A reputable breeder conducts comprehensive health testing on their breeding dogs to minimize hereditary conditions that can occur in the German Shepherd Dog breed. There are no perfect dogs, however, an ethical breeder makes sound decisions to minimize the risk of hereditary conditions so dogs have a long, healthy life. Haus Mahr German Shepherds & Training does health testing through Embark, PennHIP, OFA, and other diagnostic procedures such as CT scan.

Breeder’s Knowledge & Experience

Responsible breeders have in-depth knowledge of the breed’s history, characteristics, and care requirements. They should be able to discuss breed-specific traits, potential challenges, and proper training and socialization strategies. Experienced breeders often specialize in specific lines.

Haus Mahr German Shepherds & Training is owned by an experienced Certified Dog Trainer, AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator & ATT Judge. We specialized in Kirschental herding lines and have 20 years of experience training German Shepherds.

Living Conditions & Socialization

Ethical breeders raise their puppies in clean, safe, and stimulating environments where they receive early socialization. All puppies at Haus Mahr German Shepherds & Training are raised using the Puppy Culture program. Puppies interact with humans, other animals, and various everyday stimuli to help them develop confidence and proper behavior. At Haus Mahr German Shepherds & Training, our dogs are family. They live in our home and have plenty of room to play on our hobby farm. Unlike many larger breeders that basically “warehouse” dogs in kennels 24/7, we make sure our dogs get lots of individual attention and love.

Transparency & Communication

A reputable breeder is transparent about their breeding practices, bloodlines, and any challenges their dogs have faced. They are willing to answer questions, provide references, and share information about the puppy’s parents. Open communication is a strong indicator of a breeder’s integrity and dedication to their dogs’ well-being. Haus Mahr German Shepherds & Training shares all information about our dogs. We want puppy owners to have the best match and get off to the right start with their canine companion or working partner.

Contracts, Guarantees, & Support

Ethical breeders provide contracts that outline responsibilities for both parties, including health guarantees and spay/neuter agreements when applicable. They often offer lifetime support and guidance for owners. Ethical breeders care about dogs beyond the point of sale. Avoid breeders who pressure you to buy a puppy immediately or who make unrealistic promises about achievements.

At Haus Mahr German Shepherds & Training, we are highly selective about puppy placement. Our puppies come with an extensive legally-binding contract, lifetime support, training resources, and a money-back health guarantee. We will take any puppy or dog from our program back if the owners are unable to keep them.

Affiliation with Breed Clubs

Membership in breed organizations or clubs such as the German Shepherd Dog Club of America (GSDCA) is a good indication that a breeder follows ethical guidelines. These organizations often promote responsible breeding practices, health testing, and education about the breed. Haus Mahr German Shepherds & Training has been a proud member of the German Shepherd Dog Club of America (GSDCA) since 2021.

Red Flags

STAY AWAY from breeders who:

  • Have multiple litters, especially from multiple breeds, constantly available
  • Sell puppies without requiring an application
  • Cannot provide health certificates, AKC registration papers, microchip numbers, vet records, or other documentation
  • Show little interest in matching puppies with the right homes
  • Are unable or unwilling to provide references
  • Separate puppies from their mother and send them to homes before the age of 8 weeks old which is harmful and illegal in many states including Michigan

Choosing an ethical breeder requires research, patience, and diligence, but it pays off in the form of a healthier, well-socialized German Shepherd and a lifelong partnership built on trust. Taking the time to find an ethical breeder is the best way to ensure your new canine companion has the best possible start in life.
